West Kowloon Terminus: Connecting cities, creating Impact

The West Kowloon Terminus (WKT) is one of the largest underground railway stations in the world, spanning around 400,000 square meters. It serves as the main terminal for the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link, connecting Hong Kong to Mainland China. With 15 platforms handling both long- and short-distance trains, the station moves over 100,000 passengers every day.

Building a world-class station

Key features of the project included:

  • A 1.5-meter-thick diaphragm wall, stretching 30 meters deep
  • Reworking nearby roads to ensure smooth station access
  • A new traffic interchange, with footbridges and underground walkways
  • Approach tunnels and ventilation systems to support train operations
  • A striking station entrance with curved steel structures, large support columns, aluminium cladding, and insulated glass
  • A green roof with landscaping integrated into the station design
  • Coordination with the nearby West Kowloon Cultural Centre and over-station developments

Keeping the vision on track

We played a vital role in delivering this landmark project. As cost consultants, we:

  • Supported the design development process
  • Prepared the detailed cost plans
  • Managed risk and controlling project costs
  • Led value engineering exercises
  • Developed tender documentation

Being part of the team from the start allowed us to work closely with the designers. This early collaboration helped the project stay within budget, even as the plans evolved.

Once construction began, we deployed a team of 16 experts to the site. They managed changes, tracked costs, and helped keep progress steady through every phase of construction.
