I have been with Currie & Brown since 2007 when I joined as a trainee cost manager, having previously worked in marketing. I was considering a new direction for my career and found out about quantity surveying through a family member. I thought a career as a chartered surveyor would provide me with the challenge I was looking for.
During the final year of my part-time four-year degree course in quantity surveying I enrolled on the RICS APC programme. It was hard work completing my degree at the same time as doing my APC but it was worth it to complete the APC in the minimum period of two years and achieve chartered surveyor status.
Currie & Brown supported me well during my training. The company employs an external coach to complement the in-house training and I found this very helpful. I had to undergo quarterly assessments to make sure I was making progress on the programme and these helped to keep me focused.
As a senior cost manager I am now responsible for the delivery of cost management services on a number of projects varying in value from £0.25 million to £25 million.
I also act as an APC counsellor for several APC candidates. Apart from being able to put something back into the company, I enjoy seeing my candidates developing professionally. Being a counsellor is also a great way to keep my own knowledge up to date.
I enjoy the variety that the job gives me. I have gained experience in a wide range of industries, from projects for government bodies to projects in the education, healthcare and retail sectors.
